More knitting
I've really had fun knitting these wool soakers. They're pretty quick and easy, and it's given me a chance to play with color. I tend to avoid using more than one yarn when I knit, and it's something I really need to practice.
I love argyle patterns, but I hadn't knitted one before. This was made from the Curly Purly pattern, out of Ella Rae Classic wool. The color blocks were knitted by intarsia, and the tan "lines" are duplicate stitches. The only problem I ran into was that I started the color too low on the soaker, and so it gets cut off by the legs!

Here's the back view. The pattern actually calls for the bottom decreases to be done along the sides, but I only realized it was too long after the design was knitted, so I ended up spreading the decreases evenly across the last few rows. When I did the front side, I measured more carefully and started decreasing for the crotch at the right point. It was mostly done in the round, though the sides were split for the intarsia. I only had about an inch of seam on either side, which was pretty cool.

Any Harry Potter fan reading this will totally get what this one is about! I wanted to knit longies in the Ravenclaw (POA) color pattern. This is from the Sheepy pants pattern, and it's just your basic longies with ribbed cuffs. So cute!!

The legs look really long to me, but as I have no actual baby to measure, I had to go off of the recommended inseam in the pattern for this size. I guess babies' legs are longer than they look. I made them on the long sde, figuring I can always just roll them up. I've seen people make these into footies by continuing them and knitting socks on the ends. I really want to do that, but it seems like getting the length right would be pretty important there.
I've put a registry together for diapering supplies, since Babies R Us doesn't really have much in the way of cloth diaper stuff. It's at Wildflower Diapers. I'm waiting for the Bum Genius 3.0s to come out (apparently this will be in December) and I'll add a bunch of their AIOs to the list. But otherwise, I think that list is the rest of what I'll need to get started.
At this point, my plan is to start with prefolds and wool soakers, with other covers for when we go out. Everything I've read has suggested that it's hard to get a good fit with newborns with just about any kind of diaper, but prefolds are the easiest to work with. I have a mix of cotton and hemp prefolds in the newborn size already, and am slowly knitting soakers. I have a few Bummis and Imse Vimse covers and have registered for a few more.
When Boo gets a bit bigger, I want to start using AIOs at least for day care (or nanny, whatever we end up doing child care-wise), so I'm registering for AIOs in the next couple of sizes up. I've got some Bumkins on the list now, and I'll add the Bum Geniuses when they come out. I've got a handful of pocket diapers that I'm sure we'll also try. And I'm thinking that if the prefolds work out, we may keep doing that at night, with wool. I have no idea what we'll end up liking best, and I guess only time and experience will tell. I've also got a sample pack of g-diapers (the ones with cloth covers and flushable liners), thinking they'd be good to use for travel or in situations when I'm not sure about laundry access, but I really want to use cloth exclusively. That's the plan, at any rate.
If you check out that list and see any glaring gaps, please let me know!
In other news, we're off to London on Tuesday night for our "Babymoon". It's likely the last international flight I'll be on for a while, so I'm going to enjoy it. :-)
