Getting parts of the house painted turned out to be a much bigger deal than we anticipated. We thought, hey -- you pick out the colors and the guy comes and paints. Well... sort of.

We wanted to paint the entire downstairs: the foyer, upstairs and downstairs hallways, the laundry room, the living room, part of the litchen, the dining room, and the bar/music room. We picked out our colors and hired a painter, and thought it would be done within a week. Well, he showed up at 11:00 and left at 4:00 and worked mostly by himself, so it was taking a while. The only thing that was annoying about it was that the house was torn up for two weeks with paint and crap everywhere.

He started with the hallways and the laundry room.

Hallway before:

Hallway after:

I didn't take a photo of the laundry room before, but it was basically the same color as the hallway was, sort of an industrial white. I wanted something a little brighter! This is mostly a picture of my washer and dryer, but you get the idea.

The next room the painter started on was the living room. Here's what it looked like before, in all its sponge-painted 1996 glory:

We had wanted a deep blue color in there, and we thought we had picked out a good one. So the painter rolled it out, and we came home and both freaked out. It was a bright, cornflower blue -- not what we'd had in mind at all! I'm not sure these pictures capture just how bright it was.

So we regrouped. We knew we couldn't live with that blue, and we started to doubt the shades of red we'd picked out for the dining room. After some tears of frustration (from me), we decided to have the living room repainted and remove the dining room and bar from the mix for now, until we had time to reconsider the colors we'd picked. The painter seemed annoyed, but we negotiated a new deal and picked a new color, and he repainted the living room. This time, it was exactly what we were thinking of.

The dining nook part of the kitchen is painted below the chair rail, and because it flows from the living room with no real break, we had him paint it the same color. Here it is before:

And after:

And finally, the foyer. It was a sort of a latte color before, which I didn't mind but Doug really hated. To match the living room blue, we decided to go with a cool grey. Here are the before pics:

And after (sorry about the morning light in the first one):

And that's that! We're going to think about the dining room again and maybe paint it later this spring. I'm just so glad to have my house back!!!

So did the first living room blue LOOK darker than what ended up on the walls? If so was that true for all the paints?

I like all the improvements, especially the living room! Sponge paint is nice in a small space, like a bathroom, but not on long walls.

We had hoped that first blue paint would darken as it dried, but it didn't. It was an obnoxious shade of blue, something you'd put in a bathroom or maybe a kids' playroom, but not your living room! On the chip, it didn't look that bright, but when we held the chip up to the wall, it matched. So we decided to go with a blue that had more grey in it, and that came out just like we wanted.

I really like the LR now. The wall paint is flat (the sponge-painted stuff was semi-gloss), and it just sort of absorbs light. The art on the walls seems to float there and stands out a lot more than it did before. The room just feels different now!

Oh, beautiful. I love dramatic colors, but our spaces are so small they would feel very claustrophobic. Our living room is a pale spring green and the dining room that flows to it is a pale yellow. I adore them, and I adore yours too!

Viva la color!

You do have to be careful with colors that way, don't you? I like the way they make a room feel warm and cozy, though. Our living room is pretty big and open, so it can stand to look a little smaller. :-)

Wow, everything (inside and out) looks so great! Are you going to replace the kitchen wallpaper at some point to match, or is that too much work to contemplate right now? :D

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but we actually picked a paint color to match the wallpaper. It has a little blue and yellow fleur-de-lys -type design, and the blue matches it.

I'm so glad it's done!! We still need to get the carpet cleaned, though. And we've been wanting a new kitchen sink for a while...

i *love* the dove grey/white in the foyer. It is completely and utterly gorgeous. I am now going to pester my hubby to let me repaint things ;-)
