Just received this urgent public health warning from my aunt in an email:

The Center for Disease Control has issued a warning about a new and virulent strain of Sexually Transmitted Disease. The disease is contracted through dangerous and high-risk behavior. The disease is called Gonorrhea Lectim and pronounced "gonna re-elect him" Many victims contracted it in 2004, after having been screwed for the past four years. Naturalists and epidemiologists are amazed at how this destructive disease originated only a few years ago from a bush found in Texas.

The sad thing is that we have four candidates on the ballot for governor in Texas, and while the Republican candidate has about a third of the vote according to the polls, the rest of the vote is split almost equally between the other three candidates. I'm not sure whether a majority is required to elect a governor here or if a plurality will do, but it's sad to think that two-thirds of the voters don't want to vote for the guy who will likely win. In what universe is that really democracy?

Democracy is only good when you're on the winning team, and I consider that a serious problem with it. I have issues with any system that allows people to oppress each other by majority vote. I don't have an alternative suggestion, either, really, not being a political science major, but if you're asking "how is it really democracy if so many people are getting screwed over?", the thing is, democracy always screws people over (case in point: George W. Bush). So in this universe, that is really democracy. It's just the frustrating, ugly side of democracy -- the one we all ignore when we end up on the winning team.

*sigh* I know, and you're right. It's just depressing. Living where I live, I don't get to be on the winning team a lot, and the issues that I think are so critically important just get twisted and sidelined over and over by people who seem to me to be from another planet.

Being a Democrat in Texas is like being a member of a third party. Kinky Friedman will get more votes that the Dem candidate will. It's easy to see why people would just give up on the process and not vote at all.

Texas and California

Howdie from California! I was just passing on through checking out various Live Journals and found this interesting topic. Hope you don't mind a stranger leaving a comment, but I was wondering if Democrats have won any statewide offices in Texas since former Governor Ann Richards? Does anyone remember the former Governor's funny remark on Bush Sr. during the 1988 Democratic National Convention: "Poor George, he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth"? Fantastic! I haven't followed Texas politics much, but there is a connection between Texas and California's Governor; Arnold Schwarzenegger would like to thank former Texas Enron energy traders for their help in blindsiding former California Governor Grey Davis with an energy "crisis" which led to a successful recall against him, thus giving us the "Terminator"! Did Davis mess with Texas? :) Like many other Democrats, I too feel like my views are not being politically represented. And how could I not since my party doesn't control the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. That's right folks, how can there be checks and balances when all three branches of government are controlled by the same party?! I wonder what James Madison would be thinking right now... Well thanks for the Texas hospitality, see ya'll at the polls! - Dan

No run off for governor. Winner takes all :-(

Grandma is so lame - did you see her in the debate? She sounded like a Barbie doll, when you pulled the string in the back, she said the same thing over and over.

I think Chris Bell was the big debate winner. But he's not going to win. I'd never even seen his face before the debate.

Kinky - if elected, he would pick people for his team that are not beholden to him or Big Business, and set out making some major changes. When he wasn't smoking or entertaining that is!

A sad situation overall. Kinky has been concentrating on getting the disaffected vote - the 70% of eligible voters who didn't bother to vote in the last governor's race.

But it still won't be enough to topple Gov. Goodhair.

I missed the debate -- I'm not even sure when it was on. It's hard not to be utterly unenthusiastic about this election. I've been so disappointed by the last few, you know?

I have no idea which of the non-Perry candidates I'll vote for. I'd prefer to vote for Bell, but I would like my vote to count against Perry in the maximum way possible. So I think I would vote for one of the other two if I thought they had a serious chance of winning.

It royally ticks me off. I really can't stand the thought of Perry as our governor AGAIN!!!
